An opportunity for change in 2016
Marking 26 January – Australia Day/Survival Day
Here are two ideas for using 26 January to reflect on what the day means for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and looking to the future.
Camp and plant at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy
GrowSPACE will be conducting a free camp and plant workshop with the Aboriginal Tent Embassy community from the 24th to the 27th of January. More details are on the Facebook event page.
Come and be part of the process of creating planter boxes to install onsite at the Embassy. Be rewarded for your efforts in the evening with beautiful local music and traditional campfire storytelling among friendly people.
Continuing Culture: Australia Day Festival
Tuesday 26 January 10am – 2pm, National Museum of Australia
Celebrate the enduring traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at the National Museum of Australia this Australia Day, with the backdrop of theEncounters exhibition from the British Museum.
Meet new generations of Indigenous artists and practitioners who are keeping culture alive and strong. For more details see nma.gov.au.
ANTaR ACT activities in 2016
The ANTaR ACT committee is meeting in early February to plan our goals and actions for 2016, and we’d love you to join us.
When: Tuesday 2 February, 6pm to 7.30
Where: Snug Room at King O’Malleys, 131 City Walk (Garema Place)
Please call Cherisse on 0449 738 901 if you would like more information or assistance to get there.
Campaigns for change
ANTaR ACT will campaign on issues around justice and health, where outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are much worse than for other Australians. We will also follow the developments around constitutional recognition. One of our members, Janet Hunt, attended the ANTaR National Meeting in November 2015, and her summary of their discussion of the issues is on the ANTaR ACT website (under News).
Locally, ANTaR ACT congratulates Dr Chris Bourke on his election as a minister in the ACT Government, with responsibilities including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs. Dr Bourke was active on the ANTaR ACT committee before his election to the ACT Legislative Assembly, and we look forward to working with him on addressing the ongoing disadvantage faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT.
