David Hunter Memorial Lecture Thursday 17 Oct 5:30 for 6pm Importance of Indigenous Languages

The International Year of Indigenous Languages is a United Nations observance in 2019 that aims to raise awareness of the consequences of the endangerment of Indigenous languages across the world, with an aim to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation.

  • Keynote Speaker: Professor Jaklyn Troy (Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research, The University of Sydney) Keynote Speaker: Professor Jakelin Troy
    Prof Troy’s a Ngarigu woman from the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, and Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research at The University of Sydney. Professor Troy’s research and academic interests focus on languages, particularly endangered Aboriginal and ‘contact languages’, language education, linguistics, anthropology and visual arts. She has extensive experience developing curriculum for Australian schools, focusing on Australian language programs.
  • Awakening of Ngunnawal Language, Caroline Hughes
    Caroline is a Ngunnawal Elder, member ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body (ATSIEB) and Director Yurauna Centre, CIT. Caroline is a fierce advocate for Cultural Heritage, Community Development, Education, Health and Employment
  • Dr John Harris, Bible Society Archives held at St Mark’s Bible translation into Indigenous languages. These will also be displayed.

About the Event:
The David Hunter Memorial Lecture honours the memory of David Hunter’s contributions to reconciliation and Indigenous rights. David Hunter was one of the founding members of ANTaR, and an enormously supportive and inspiring activist on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues. David passed away in December 2003.
