Sea of Hands 20th anniversary
Next year marks the 20
th anniversary of the first
Sea of Hands on 12 October 1997. Many Canberrans were involved in setting up this display, which was a powerful statement of support for native title and reconciliation.
To mark this anniversary, ANTaR ACT would like to gather the stories of those who helped in any way, from planting hands, to helping promote, to supporting through being there. Free community film screening of Putuparri and the Rainmakers
(NOTE – short notice – Tuesday 13 September)
The ACT Human Rights Commission and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body invite you to join them at a free community film screening of Putuparri and the Rainmakers to celebrate the anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). This is partly implemented in new s27(2) of the Human Rights Act which explicitly recognises Aboriginal cultural rights.
Putuparri and the Rainmakers is a universal story about the sacred relationships between people and place. It takes audiences on a rare and emotional journey to meet the traditional rainmakers of Australia’s Great Sandy Desert who have fought a twenty-year battle to win back their traditional homeland. http://nfsa.gov.au/calendar/event/6543-putuparri-and-rainmakers/

Reconciliation Art Exhibition in Yass
The NSW Reconciliation Council (NSWRC) and the National Trust present a state-wide tour of award-winning artworks from this year’s NSW Schools’ Reconciliation Challenge.
The 16 artworks – which were selected as the best of more than 700 entries to NSWRC’s annual art competition – will be put on display at a series of National Trust venues around NSW, starting in Yass. All were created by NSW school students in years 5-9, and were inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultures and stories.
16 September – 17 October: Cooma Cottage in Yass.
Open Friday – Sunday, as part of the Sculpture in the Paddock festival.
National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples
The National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples is working very hard to stay afloat so they can continue to fight for the rights of Australia’s First Peoples. They are putting pressure on the Prime Minister to listen to National Congress and recognise them as the peak body for Australia’s First Peoples. Please consider becoming a Friend of Congress or, if an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, a Member of Congress.
ANTaR ACT events
The next ANTaR ACT committee meeting will be held on Tuesday 4 October, 6pm, at King O’Malleys in the Snug Room (behind the bar). You are welcome to join us to discuss plans for the remainder of the year, including the next David Hunter Memorial Lecture.
